For the first time, the overall winner of the Škoda Swiss Bike Cup is Fabio Püntener. In the middle of the week it was announced that the rider from Uri would be joining the Scott-Sram team. On Saturday, he competed for his new team for the first time at the race in Gränichen – and won straight away.
“It’s obviously great that it worked out right from the start,” said Püntener. “The processes already fit well, and I also got used to the new bike quickly.” Püntener’s victory was only in danger at the start of the race. His only remaining competitor in the battle for the overall title, Luca Schätti (BXIS PERFORMANCE Race Team), was unable to keep up with the pace of the Uri native after a third of the race. In the end, Püntener left his new teammate, American Bjorn Riley (SCOTT-SRAM MTB Racing), half a minute behind in second place, with Schätti taking third.
Forchini defends her lead
Ramona Forchini (BXIS PERFORMANCE Race Team) has won the overall title of the Škoda Swiss Bike Cup for the second time after 2019. After Alessandra Keller announced in midweek that she would not be competing in Gränichen, Forchini’s overall victory was all but certain. Nevertheless, the 31-year-old put in a strong performance and was beaten only by Britain’s Isla Short.
“There was no more in me today, but I’m happy to have won the overall title.” Emilly Johnston (SCOTT-SRAM MTB Racing) took third place on the podium.
L’Homme surprises Püntener, Schibler remains dominant
Maxime L’Homme delivered a dominant performance in the U23 category. The rider from western Switzerland controlled the race from the front and, in the final sprint, not only claimed the day’s victory but also overtook Romano Püntener (THÖMUS AKROS – YOUNGSTARS) in the overall standings, with Püntener finishing eighth. Felix Sprenger (WENAWESER Racing/RV Schaan) secured second place by a small margin ahead of Italian Fabio Bassignana (KTM PROTEK ELETTROSYSTEM). Among the U23 women, Fiona Schibler (BIKE TEAM SOLOTHURN) once again dominated, winning both her third race of the season and the overall title. Katrin Embacher (TREK FUTURE Racing) and Finja Lipp (GHOST FACTORY Racing) finished second and third.
Iten and De Almeida win the U19 overall standings
In the men’s U19 category, French rider Noa Filippi (CANYON CLLCTV) rode a start-to-finish victory. He left Lewin Iten (RVW PASOLINO RACING), who claimed the overall title, in second place, with Levin Näf (KA-BOOM Raceteam) taking third. Among the women, Adina Daubner (Singer Racing Team) secured the day’s victory ahead of her teammate Paulina Lange. Third place went to Tess De Almeida (Thömus young – équipe dubraquet), who overtook Lea Bösch (ÄGERI CYCLING RACE TEAM) by one point in the overall standings.
On Sunday, the final races of this year’s Škoda Swiss Bike Cup will take place in the youth categories.
